Superstar shortstop Alex Rodriguez was born Alexander Emanuel Rodriguez on 27 July, 1975 in New York, New York. His father, Victor, and his mother, Lourdes, moved Alex, his brother Joe and his sister Suzy to the Dominican Republic when Alex was four years old. Victor played catcher for a Dominican professional baseball team. After several years the Rodriguez family moved to Miami and Victor and Lourdes eventually separated. Lourdes worked two jobs to allow Alex to attend private school.
Alex attended the Westminster Christian Academy in Miami. He was scouted in high school and in 1992 his team was named the National Champions by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association. Alex Rodriguez received a baseball scholarship to the University of Miami. In 1993, he was the USA Junior Player of the Year and the Gatorade National Student Athlete of the Year. Also in 1993, in June, he was the Seattle Mariner’s first free-agent amateur draft pick. |
